Tbilisi

Military Road
The Military Road begins in Mtskheta and reaches the border crossing on the Georgian-Russian border, but is actually part of a road that begins in Tbilisi and ends about two hundred kilometers north of it, in Vladikavkaz, Russia.
It is considered one of the most difficult roads, but also one of the most amazing. Writers have praised its landscapes, which were the backdrop for the journeys of merchants, warriors, and travelers eager for wandering. As the gateway between Georgia and Russia, many peoples passed through this road trying to invade the south. The route was then guarded by local principalities that divided the space between them.
Stone observation towers that have survived to this day are evidence of the fear of these principalities from the frequent invasions. The road was particularly important to the kings of Iberia, whose capital, Mtskheta, was located at the southern end of the road, near Tbilisi, at the confluence of the rivers. Despite its great importance and being a central axis connecting north and south, it is actually a narrow and congested road to this day.
